Fashion & Architecture exhibition @ ARCAM

Friday July 16, the opening of the Fashion & Architecture exhibition in ARCAM. ARCAM, Ontfront and V2A Architectuur & Stedebouw have challenged four duos, each comprising of a fashion designer and an architect, to make a design together.

The four duos:
Mattijs van Bergen (MATTIJS) & Anouk Vogel (Anouk Vogel Landscape Architecture)
Iris van Herpen & Jan Benthem and Mels Crouwel (Benthem Crouwel Architekten)
Farida Sedoc (Hosselaer) & Nicole and Marc Maurer (Maurer United)
Kentroy Yearwood (Intoxica) & Jeroen Bergsma (2012 Architecten)

Mattijs van Bergen made a sustainable design together with landscape architect Anouk Vogel. Their goal was to make an item not related to a season but adjustable to every season. Their design, a dress made of waterpipes, can be renewed by different flowers.

"In the beginning, I liked the speed of the succession of collections. You can renew yourself constantly. But you notice that people are increasingly looking for durability in clothing. They buy something to last", says Mattijs van Bergen.

Opening Amsterdam International Fashion Week

Last Wednesday, MATTIJS opened the AIFW together with Jan Taminiau. Though it was raining outside of the Westergasfabriek, inside the festivity was going on with spectacular shows.

Mattijs van Bergen showed his A/W 2010 collection called 'Phoenix'. This mythological bird, together with icons like Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth, inspired the designer to bring the couture clothing of the fourties back to life. Black mini-skirts are worn with deconstructed old pink jackets, and complicated pleated dresses in gold and bright colours make women look seductive yet powerful. Eye-catcher of the show was a long black coat made of ostrich feathers. With its accentuated waists and shoulders, MATTIJS' clothes make every woman look like a goddess.

Van Bergen received a big compliment by Dutch newspaper 'Het Parool': the golden dress on the first picture has been chosen as 'Dress of the day' and will be shown in the window display of Amsterdam’s Maison de Bonneterie.

Get it done

Yesterday evening 'Get it done' was launched on the top floor of the former ABN AMRO building in Amsterdam. Visitors were treated to a special performance by singer Wende Snijders and a fairytale view on the canals covered in snow. Founder/actress Hanna Verboom looked stunning in a golden MATTIJS jacket.

Visit their website and support the projects!

GET IT DONE is a new way to get aid projects done.

Why?
Aid used to be simple, personal, direct. Somehow, it has become all about the middlemen, about big anonimous organisations helping equally anonimous 'victims'. The personal connection is missing and results are often invisible. GET IT DONE brings aid back to where it once started: as the basic human activity of taking care of each other.

How?
Tapping into the huge potential of existing online social networks such as Hyves and Facebook, GET IT DONE is about you, your friends, your project. Each selected project is given a webpage and a widget, a mobile mini-website. You can place the widget of a project you like on your personal profile page and share it with your friends. Once placed, the widget functions as a 'window' through which you can communicate and will be updated about your project's progress. The widget makes it easy to make a donation and/or do-nation. No middlemen, no fees.

Who?
On GET IT DONE, the people who run projects locally are called MAKERS. They are responsible for a successful completion of their project. The people who actively promote projects within their online social network are called MOVERS. They function as a bridge between the project and potential donors, or, as we call them, SHAKERS: those who place the widget, share it, donate and/or do-nate. MAKERS, MOVERS and SHAKERS can get their project DONE quickly and (cost)efficiently. Together.

ELLE 20 years in Holland

Yesterday evening Dutch ELLE Magazine celebrated its 20th birthday. Almost all fashionable attenders showed up according the dress code: little black dress and/or golden shoes.

The little black dress also was the inspiration for an exhibition in Rollan Didier's gallery. ELLE asked 20 Dutch photographers and ELLE contributors to shoot this iconic fashion item. Amongst them Oof Verschuren, Petrovsky & Ramone and Erwin Olaf. All prints are sold for 950 euro and the profit will be given to War Child.
The exposition is open for public: September 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 & 27 from noon till 5 PM. 2e Laurierdwarsstraat 64H.

The street party was interrupted by a special Diesel Black Gold performance to congratulate ELLE.

ELLE 20 comes out with 6 covers starring cover model Doutzen Kroes. We can't help but prefer the cover with MATTIJS's dress on it!

ELLE 20 is available in shops from today on. Buy this 372 pages thick collectors issue and you might win 20.000 euro shopping money to spend in Maison de Bonneterie!

Prelude

During Prelude last month, upcoming designer label MATTIJS showed its SS 2010 collection.

Named Florish Odalisk, this collection by Dutch designer Mattijs van Bergen examines the structures and features of flowers, resulting in a feminine and fluent collection with a colourful statement. Soft silks melt around the body, combined with Van Bergen’s signature pleating. Airy constructions breathe spring softness and capture a summer feeling.

This is MATTIJS’ fourth full ready-to-wear collection since graduating from Central Saint Martins College in London in 2007.
